Pune, also called Poona, city, west-central Maharashtra state. Pune is the cultural capital of the Maratha peoples. It the second-largest city in the state of Maharashtra, with an estimated population of 7.4 million as of 2020. Pune has long been a major educational and cultural centre; former prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru referred to it as the “Oxford and Cambridge of India.”
